Faerun

At a Glance

Faerûn is the northwestern portion of the dominant continent on the planet Abeir-Toril; the center of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.

The Cyclopedia of the Realms, from which this site takes some of its formatting, was pretty much just an alphabetical list of a bunch of Realms-related stuff, mainly locations. The 3rd edition campaign setting returned to that format, but A Grand Tour of the Realms did something interesting that I’d like to adapt: a sort of narrative. It was, in fact, a grand tour of the Realms.

I don’t really like the idea of the Heartlands, because… well, everywhere is the Heartlands from the point of view of those who live there. Even the Quoya Desert is the center of the universe for some people. Granted, they don’t get out much, but that doesn’t invalidate their cultural perspective. So I’m not going to call part of the Realms the Heartlands and everything else “Beyond the Heartlands” like the Grand Tour does, and I’m going to put things in a different order, but let’s give it a shot.

The tour (so far) includes the Hordelands, but not Kara-Tur, Zakhara, or Maztica. However, the list is organized in a way that enables Zakhara and then Kara-Tur to be easily appended at some future date. It also does not include the Underdark, which will be another project for the (hopefully near) future.

The current year, for my campaign and this site, is 1365 Dalereckoning; the Year of the Sword.

Cormyr is a strategic as well as logical place to start our exploration of the Realms.
