What You See

An ascomoid is a rolling spheroid fungus, about 10 feet in diameter and 2600 lbs. If attacked, it spews jets of deadly spores.

Ascomoids are comparable to puffball fungi found on Earth, with the notable exception of having a thick skin. A large puffball is mentioned on a University of Hawaii page — 9 feet in circumference and 48 lbs. That measurement equates to about 12.3 cubic feet, which puts the pollen at approximately 3.9 lbs per cubic foot. An ascomoid is described as up to 10 feet in diameter, which is close to 525 cubic feet, so the weight of the pollen would surpass 2000 lbs.

To this must be added the weight of the skin. A 10 foot sphere has a surface area of about 314 square feet. Another helpful website shows each 1/64″ of thickness is equal to about an ounce per square foot. The same page says that 11-14 oz leather is used for harnesses, saddles, and heavy belts. I think the skin of the ascomoid should be at least a half-inch thick. That makes it pretty tough. It also means the skin weighs 2 lb per square foot, or about 628 lbs, bringing the total weight to over 2600 lbs.
