The Outer Planes

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

The planes are organized (or imagined) in different ways, according to one of several cosmologies.

The Great Wheel

There are seventeen Outer Planes in this cosmology: Celestia, Bytopia, Elysium, Beastlands, Arborea, Ysgard, Limbo, Pandemonium, the Abyss, Carceri, Hades, Gehenna, Baator, Acheron, Mechanus, Arcadia, and the Outlands.

The Realms Cosmology

In place of the seventeen Outer Planes there are 21 planes where the Faerunian powers are said to dwell: the Abyss, Arvandor, the Barrens of Doom and Despair, Brightwater, the Demonweb Pits, Dragon Eyrie, Dwarfhome, Dweomerheart, Fury’s Heart, the Gates of the Moon, Golden Hills, Green Fields, Hammergrim, Heliopolis, the House of Knowledge, the House of Nature, the Nine Hells, Nishrek, the Supreme Throne, the House of the Triad, and Warrior’s Rest.
