Slavery

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

A hot-button topic on Earth, but a fact of life in many parts of Faerûn.

The list of places where slavery is at least tolerated includes Amn, Calimshan, Dambrath, Mulhorand, Semphar, Thay, and Unther. Most of Chessenta has accepted slavery; only Cimbar and Soorenar still retain their founding fathers’ vision of freedom for all citizens.

As a general rule, slavery is more accepted in the south, more criticized in the north. There are exceptions, however. Slavery is legal in Luskan, Zhentil Keep, Hillsfar, and Mulmaster, although the governments of those city-states don’t always go out of their way to make this known to visitors. Slaves may also kept in any communities openly or secretly controlled by the Red Wizards or the Zhentarim. The hidden power of the Zhentarim results in slavers (at least those who make friendly with the Zhentarim) finding safe haven in Sembia and far-flung cities of the north including Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Mirabar.

  • Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting [11836] (3e) page 206 — there’s a list of places where Thay “acquires” slaves, though probably not always through direct sales
  • Ruins of Zhentil Keep [1120] — the map shows areas of Zhentarim influence
  • Original Material — whatever doesn’t come directly from the above-cited sources was made up for the Xaeyruudh campaign
