The Swamp of Akhlaur

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

A swamp in Halruaa.

Circa 1150 DR, this was dry land, surrounding the tower of a conjurer named Akhlaur. A botched casting resulted in the wizard’s disappearance… and in a portal remaining open, through which water and monsters flowed. Fast-forward to the present, and while the River Ghalagar drains much of the water coming through the portal, a still-expanding swamp has claimed nearly 3,000 square miles. Many have tried to uncover (and neutralize) the source of the flooding, but these efforts have been resisted by the denizens of the swamp: snakes, crocodiles, piranha, and other typical swamp monsters, plus ghouls, wights, and something decidedly atypicallaraken. These creatures are found nowhere else in Faerûn and it may be safely assumed that they had something to do with Akhlaur’s demise.

Located four miles south of Essembra, in Battledale, Aencar’s Manor is almost assuredly haunted, but that hasn’t stopped the Cult of the Dragon from setting up a base here.

Abbey of the Sword

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

A temple of Tempus, built in the ruins of a castle in Battledale where Tempus appeared during the Time of Troubles. The cellars of the castle, and the underdark tunnels nearby, feature many still-operational portals. The abbey is overrun by Auzkovyn drow in 1371 DR, who arrive through one of those portals and decimate the staff of the abbey. Now, the followers of Tempus are stretched even more thinly.

Nashkel

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

A settlement, technically the northernmost reach of Amn but semi-autonomous in practice. The population of the town is about 3,000 (98% human, 2% halfling, with a few shield dwarves), with another 1,500 in outlying hamlets and farms.

Nashkel is located on the Trade Way, just north of the Cloud Peaks. The section of this road between Nashkel and Crimmor is locally referred to as the Bitten Road since it runs between the Fangs; the two sheer stone needles that mark the southern end of Fang Pass through the Cloud Peaks. The Uldoon Trail goes northeast, linking Nashkel with Berdusk.

The city is sometimes referred to as the Cold City, the Windy City, or the Sloping City. The people of Nashkel are called Nashkars.

Who Rules

Mayor Berrun Ghastkill is an adventurous sort, famous for saving many townsfolk from goblins out of the Cloud Peaks.

Notable Residents

  • Lord Evan Ghastkill, brother of the Mayor, is sick but stubbornly holds onto the reins of his family. He has a wife, Cara, and a son, Evan the Younger.
  • Jasha Istor is a cleric of Auril and lives at Icedawn’s House. She is an experienced guide in the Cloud Peaks, though her price is double normal the rate charged by anyone else.
  • Loaber Plashdeep is a Harper.
  • Ries Kensiddar owns The Northern Light inn & tavern.
  • Salla Pitontoes is a cleric of Tymora and operates Cloud Peaks Outfitters.

Locations

  • Cloud Peaks Outfitters is operated by Salla Pitontoes. It specializes in equipment for travelers heading into the mountains.
  • Icedawn’s House is a shrine dedicated to Auril. It’s located outside the town, in a small cabin upslope; Jasha Istor lives and greets the faithful here.
  • The Northern Light is an inn & tavern. Lights both magical and mundane are always lit here; the owner has met drow and the Nightbringers of Shar, and is now terrified of the dark.
  • Plashdeep Stables is the local place to buy and trade horses. Loaber Plashdeep works here.
