The Population of Mulhorand

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

The population of Mulhorand is described in FR10 (page 11) in a system of statements, which must be decrypted… and ultimately get contradicted in 3e anyway, but this is what 2e said.

  • There are about 900,000 people.
  • A slave is counted in the census as 0.7 person.
  • About 250,000 live in the cities and towns;
  • That means 650,000 live in rural places that don’t count as a town.
  • In the urban areas, free citizens and slaves are about equal in number.
  • In the rural areas, there are about 5 times as many slaves as free citizens.

So divide 250k by 2 (because the number of free and slaves in the cities is equal on the census) and get 125,000 free and 125,000 person-equivalent slaves… which means 178,572 actual slaves [125000/.7] in the cities.

Divide 650k by 6 (because the census says there are 5 slaves for each free in the countryside) and get 108,334 free citizens and 541,667 person-equivalent slaves, which means 773,810 slaves [541,667/.7] in the rural areas.

This means the real population of Mulhorand is 1,185,716. The population “on paper” –counting the slaves as seven-tenths of a person– is 900,000. There are 233,334 free citizens and 952,382 slaves. The urban population is 303,572 and the rural population is 882,144.

I tend to round up when figuring population, so the numbers may not always sum “correctly.”

The Xaeyruudh Campaign

I don’t want to use exact numbers like 900,000 or 250,000, so I tweaked them for my own campaign. Here’s what I decided on.

URBAN
123,993 free
193,812 slave (135,668 on the census)

RURAL
118,800 free
787,493 slave (551,245 on the census)

TOTAL
242,793 free
981,305 slave (686,913 on the census)

The overall population of Mulhorand is 1,224,098 people (929,706 on the census).

Incidentally, in this campaign, Pharaoh Horustep III changes the census policy to count every warm body as one full warm body, so the 0.7 factor disappears.
