Bag of Nature’s Allies

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

This is a suggested replacement for the bag of tricks in the DMG (page 248).

This small sack is typically stitched together from an assortment of leather scraps, and fastened with a cheap drawstring or bit of cord. The bits of hide will often come from several different beasts, so some patches will be furry while others are smooth or scaled or even feathered. The leather is often dyed one or more colors that appear in nature, with summer colors being most common. The bag appears otherwise unremarkable at first glance, but every few minutes a bulge within it fidgets and emits a brief muffled chirp, squeak, grunt, yowl, or other sound of bestial origin.

Inside the bag is a slightly warm mass of fur, feathers, bone, and muscle which accumulates over the course of 24 hours. When its “gestation” is done, the mass detaches from the interior of the bag and forms a firm ball about 4 inches in diameter. At any time after completing this development, the ball may be easily removed from the bag. As soon as the ball exits the bag, it begins growing. Tossing it or dropping it to a horizondal dirt or stone surface will cause it to finish its transformation by the end of the same round; otherwise the transformation takes three rounds.

When transformation is complete, the furball will have become a full-sized animal. The type of animal is determined randomly; there is no known way of influencing or predicting which type of animal will appear.

The animal will serve the character who summoned it (effected by withdrawing it from the bag) for 1 minute, after which it will disappear. It will understand and obey (to the best of its ability) all single-word commands issued by the summoner, regardless of language. Summoners who have a means of issuing commands telepathically do not need to vocalize them. The animal can be dismissed earlier by using various spells, but orders to disappear or return to the bag will be ineffective.

Forcibly removing the mass of fur from the bag before it’s done developing cannot be accomplished without cutting/tearing the stitching of (and thus ruining) the bag; furthermore, the immature furball will not function when thrown.

Each summon uses one charge. The bag has 50 charges when created. With each expended charge, the material of the bag grows imperceptibly thinner; when the last furball is pulled forth, the stitching tears free of at least one patch and the bag falls to worn fragments. Even it stitched back together, the bag cannot be re-enchanted. With or without a furball, the bag weighs about 1 lb.
