Great Gods

“The Great Gods are neither good nor evil, lawful nor chaotic. They are beyond such matters.”
I assign the gods alignments, below, in defiance of this statement. As I see it, you have two options.

  1. Alignment does not apply to the powers. People are attracted to the worship of particular deities based on how that deity’s portfolio meshes with the individual’s alignment. The apparent specific alignment of each church reflects the attitudes of the mortal in charge of that church at any given time. For example, Haku’s portfolio consists of ideas like freedom and independence; an extremely Lawful NPC who is flawlessly organized and punctual and structured would find the church of Haku to be highly chaotic. However, Haku is not Chaotic… it’s just highly likely that most the leadership of Haku’s church is Chaotic, due to the portfolio involving freedom rather following the rules. Note that this should apply to other pantheons as well. Bane is not evil, in this option… but tyranny and oppression make most people miserable (or dead) and that’s pretty evil, and his church attracts people who like to inflict those things on other people, and thus the church and its patron are widely considered evil because the priests and their actions/motives are evil.
  2. The gods do have alignments. People are attracted to or repelled from various churches based on their interpretation of what the church stands for, as in the first option. However, in this case priests behave as directed by divine vision and actively attempt to enforce the church’s wishes (as shaped by the deity’s alignment) on the rest of the world.

In either case, PCs should be free to choose any patron they want to follow, with the understanding that if their alignment doesn’t mesh well with the alignment of the church, interaction may get uncomfortable.
