Amulet of Phelthong

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

A magical item, first crafted by Phelthong.

This amulet gives the wearer the ability to comprehend languages whenever the amulet is worn or held. The wearer can also use dimension door twice per day, obscuring mist once per day, and time stop once per 12 days.

3.5e Pricing

Time stop is a 9th level spell, dimension door is a 4th level spell, and comprehend languages and obscuring mist are 1st level spells. Caster level should be determined for dimension door (CL determines the range of the teleport) and obscuring mist (CL determines the duration), but we can assume minimum necessary levels for the other two spells.

So choose or roll on this table for dimension door caster level.

Random CL (range)
001-125 7 (680 ft)
126-234 8 (720 ft)
235-331 9 (760 ft)
332-418 10 (800 ft)
419-497 11 (840 ft)
498-570 12 (880 ft)
571-637 13 (920 ft)
638-699 14 (960 ft)
700-757 15 (1000 ft)
758-811 16 (1040 ft)
812-862 17 (1080 ft)
863-910 18 (1120 ft)
911-956 19 (1160 ft)
957-000 20 (1200 ft)

Also, choose or roll on this table for obscuring mist caster level.

Random CL (duration)
001-438 1 (1 min)
439-657 2 (2 mins)
658-803 3 (3 mins)
804-912 4 (4 mins)
913-000 5 (5 mins)

Our pricing shapes up like this.

  • comprehend languages: 1 x 1 x 2000 x 1.5 because the spell duration is 10 mins per level
  • obscuring mist: 1 x CL1 x 1800 x 1/5 due to being one use per day, where CL1 is the obscuring mist caster level you determined above
  • dimension door: 4 x CL2 x 1800 x 2/5 due to being two uses per day, where CL2 is the dimension door caster level you determined above
  • time stop: 9 x 17 x 1800 x 1/60 due to being one use per 12 days

There’s one final adjustment. Find the highest value in the four bullet points above. This number gets left alone (multiplied by 1). Sum all the other values and multiply by 1.5 because they’re additional unrelated powers in the same item. Then add those two numbers together for your final price.

Example 1: Maximum Price.

For this case, the variable caster levels are maxed.

  1. comprehend languages: 1 x 1 x 2000 x 1.5 = 3,000
  2. obscuring mist: 1 x 5 x 1800 x 1/5 = 1,800
  3. dimension door: 4 x 20 x 1800 x 2/5 = 57,600
  4. time stop: 9 x 17 x 1800 x 1/60 = 4,590
  5. The biggest value is 57,600, and the sum of everything else is 9,390
  6. 9390 x 1.5 = 14,085
  7. Total price = 57,600 + 14,085 = 71,685

Example 2: Minimum Price.

For this case, the variable caster levels are minimized.

  1. comprehend languages: 1 x 1 x 2000 x 1.5 = 3,000
  2. obscuring mist: 1 x 1 x 1800 x 1/5 = 360
  3. dimension door: 4 x 7 x 1800 x 2/5 = 20,160
  4. time stop: 9 x 17 x 1800 x 1/60 = 4,590
  5. The biggest value is 20,160, and the sum of everything else is 7,950
  6. 7950 x 1.5 = 11,925
  7. Total price = 20,160 + 11,925 = 32,085
