Border Forest

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

The Border Forest is a relatively remote forest north of the Dales, west of the Moonsea and the Ride, and east of Anauroch. Zhentish men log the southern edge, but there isn’t much reason to travel through this wood, and hence it has remained mostly unexplored by all but the fey who call it home.

Cormanthor

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

Cormanthor, also called the Elven Wood, is among the largest forests of Faerûn. It was once home to Cormanthyr and various smaller elven kingdoms, but those crowns have vanished in the Elven Retreat to Evermeet and other secluded elven holds. As the elves melt away, the Dalesfolk are realizing how deceptive the peace of the wood was in centuries past as drow and other creatures of the Realms Below now rise unchecked to battle treasure-seekers and sellswords of all races for dominion over the forest and its jewels… most notably Myth Drannor.

Who Rules

The year, in the Xaeyruudh campaign, is 1365 DR. No one creature can be said to rule the forest.

High Forest

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

The High Forest is a large forest of the Sword Coast North.

Described thus on Candlekeep, by The Hooded One:

I think of the High Forest this way: that mossy Hoh rainforest shot [this] is like some of the forest around the Unicorn Run (in other places, it looks lore like the “rainforest autumn 15” pic a few clicks on the left arrow away from the Hoh shot [this]). The western border of the forest is like Sherwood Forest (big old oaks, dense bush, saplings growing where big trees have fallen), but shifts to redwood-like [but NOT redwoods; see the trees of the Realms in the gold box Realms boxed set] “tall trees” in the northwestern corner (Woods of Turlang”). As you head east across the top of the High Forest, you get more and more conifers – – and more and more exposed rock and hilly terrain (think Canadian Shieldcottage country” forest). The eastern border of the High Forest is dominated by conifers, but as the verges turn southwest along the Delimbiyr, more and more hardwoods mix in.
Most of the center of the High Forest is wooded ridge-type mountains like the Blue Ridge Mountains or the Appalachians in Pennsylvania, but here and there some sharp, bare peaks (the Star Mounts) thrust up out of the “endless” trees.

Whenever Gilgeam is not present, the undisputed master of the forest is Skuthosiin, a green dragon with a fearsome reputation in Unther and Chessenta.

  • Candlekeep — Hoondatha suggested that Gilgeam stocked the Methwood as a hunting preserve.

The Ganathwood is a quiet and unremarkable forest, thanks in large part to the church of Isis.  Priestesses and adventurers have been clearing out the forest and restoring the ecosystem since the third and hopefully final defeat of Sibethibis “the Jade Plague” in 1309 DR.
