Defender of the Eastern Way

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

A title with little prestige and much danger in Mulhorand. The Defender of the Eastern Way is responsible to protect the eastern portion of Mulhorand from monsters and bandits. In the past, the post has had a high turnover rate as the foothills of the Dragonsword are periodically hazardous. The current incumbent is Hethhab; to Rezim’s chagrin he’s proving more resilient than his predecessors.

Zulkirs

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

The Zulkirs number eight; one for each school of magic. In theory, they form a council which leads the Red Wizards and rule the nation of Thay. In practice, each forms temporary alliances only in the interest of furthering their own agenda and personal power. None is recognized as the sole sovereign of Thay, but all are afforded the deference due a king and the reverence due a god; death (and perhaps subsequent undeath) is the usual price of disrespect.

The first Zulkirs declare themselves the masters of Thay in 1030 DR, and successfully defend themselves and impose their will on the commoners and lesser wizards for the next 44 years. After that point they are generally accepted in Thay. Individual challengers have come and gone since then, but no large-scaled resistance has been successfully mounted.

Notable Individuals

Ythazz Buvaar is noted as one of the first Zulkirs, but his school isn’t listed. [FR6]

Zulkir of Necromancy
  • Nyressa Flass, known as the Vampire Zulkir, is Zulkir of Necromancy from an unknown date until 1157 DR, when she is defeated by a number of foes led by Szass Tam. [GHotR:122] It’s noted that she “lived” for over 300 years, but it’s not stated how many of those years saw her reigning over the school of necromancy. [1121a:8]
  • Szass Tam replaces Nyressa Flass in 1157 DR. [GHotR:122] He is noted as only the third person to hold that title [FR6:11] and also the third head of his family since the founding of Thay. [FR6:52] He is still Zulkir in 1368 DR.

Lady of the Court of Waterdeep

This information is intended for use with the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

At a Glance

A title bestowed by Piergeiron —or, presumably, by any of the other Lords— which grants the recipient noble status in Waterdeep. Thus far, it appears to be used only to elevate common-born women who are serving the city as escorts for visiting dignitaries.
